The diagnostic and protection studies have complete preliminary standalone estimates. The membrane-design hypothesis needs its own fabrication and testing scope before a budget can be stated.
USD planning estimates, not quotes or commitments. These figures come from the same model as the detailed scenarios below. Standalone studies cannot be added into a portfolio without reconciling shared people and equipment.
These preliminary estimates fund the planned teams, equipment and tests for all eight studies. They also allow for quality checks, waste handling, institutional costs and uncertainty.
Staffing, equipment, services and analytical capacity are preliminary planning allowances. Final sampling allocations, suitable laboratory methods and supplier quotes require confirmation before a study begins.
These are planning estimates, not supplier quotes or approved spending. Prices were checked September 9, 2026. No laboratory, feed source or field site is secured. A negative or inconclusive result remains a valid research outcome.

Independent study estimates — USD, rounded to nearest $1,000
Lower and higher cases test changes in costs and quality-control allowances while keeping the core experiment scope, team effort and duration. They are not confidence intervals, minimum bids or maximum prices. Each base estimate includes a 15% risk reserve on direct plus institutional costs. See the assumptions.
Choose one study to support. These alternatives must not be added into one fundraising total. Shared staff and equipment need reconciliation before running several. All A–H estimates use the same salary benchmarks, employer costs, tax, freight, capital exclusions, institutional-cost method and reserve rules. Durations, staff effort, equipment and analytical capacity vary by study.

People and founder compensation
Scientific salaries use the annual midpoint of a published role range. A full-time primary scientist works with a complementary scientist, a technician, a part-time scientific lead and an independent statistician/QA role. The scientific lead owns laboratory methods and decisions. [B01][B02][B03]
Daniel’s requested input stays at $135,200 annual gross, before employer costs: $135,200 for E or F, $169,000 for G, and $202,800 for H. It covers full-time project coordination, evidence records, schedules, logistics and reporting. It is not approved compensation or a verified founder-market average. Fundraising and past personal expenses are not silently charged to scientific delivery. Concurrent awards must split actual effort; Daniel cannot be four full-time people.
Base employer burden is 32.4% for professional roles, including a proxy for Daniel, and 37.5% for the technician. Actual employment arrangements may differ. Nonfounder salaries rise 3% for funded months after month 12; that is a project assumption. Salary cost = annual rate × FTE × funded months / 12, with that increase applied only to later months. [B04][P-COST]
Testing, hardware and complete cost
A–G use a $225 panel-equivalent allowance: $150 combined major/trace ICP-MS + $20 ion chromatography + $55 project matrix-preparation allowance. H adds $20 DOC/total nitrogen, giving $245. Published nonacademic analytical rates anchor the first components. These bundles do not establish a validated method for brine, solids or sorbent leachates. Separate method-development labor, commissioning, blind tests and extra QC are also budgeted. [B05][P-COST]
Catalog components anchor selected estimates; custom rigs are explicitly unquoted project allowances. The small Sterlitech cell does not meet F’s 0.02 m² specification by itself. G and H require continuous-rated thermal systems. H’s chamber must meet the loaded humidity/temperature envelope. A published price does not qualify equipment for an experiment. [B06][B07][B08][B09]
For goods: landed unit cost = active unit estimate × 1.05 freight × 1.1055 Seattle planning tax. The 5% freight is a project assumption; tax uses the Seattle Q3 2026 rate without an exemption. Service tax, actual delivery location and later price/rate changes must be reconciled with the host. [B10][P-COST]
Modified total direct cost = total direct cost − qualifying equipment acquisitions. The model assumes equipment lasts more than one year and excludes each equipment unit or assembled asset costing at least $5,000 landed; smaller items stay in the base. Institutional cost = 55.5% × that modified base. No subawards or building rentals are included; a host must confirm asset classifications and its applicable rate/base. [B04][B11]
Funding envelope = (direct cost + institutional cost) × (1 + reserve rate). Base reserve is 15%. This is a fundraising risk allowance; a grant application must use its funder’s rules and reviewed cost categories. There is no assumed mineral income, grant award, free equipment or automatic salary discount. The short feasibility proposals, A–D and plant scenarios are separate scopes.

What would change the estimate
The scientific lead must confirm sample precision and methods; the host must price space/access, employment and indirects; suppliers must quote qualified rigs; and the project must arrange feed/site access, disposal and end-use requirements. G assumes safe unattended shutdown plus extra relief coverage, not a continuously staffed 24-hour watch. H assumes two feasible seasonal windows. Changed staffing, extra seasons or expanded testing require a revised budget.
Before execution, freeze one scope with the scientific lead and host. Use commissioning to confirm equipment and assay performance, then authorize the confirmatory stage. If the plan changes, recalculate the full budget; do not describe these totals as a smaller feasibility phase.

Resource assumptions
Staffing, equipment, services and analytical capacity are preliminary planning allowances. Final sampling allocations, suitable laboratory methods and supplier quotes require confirmation before a study begins.
Budgeted analytical panels represent testing capacity. They do not establish statistical power or a final sampling allocation. A scientific lead must set independent replication, analytical methods and quality-control needs for the selected feed and intended use.
The estimates use one salary and cost method across all eight alternatives. Duration, staff effort and required equipment vary by study. See the shared calculation method.
