Candidate 01 / Diagnostic method · Study A
Find the cause.
Choose the right action.
Can a small set of crossed tests identify a better corrective action for gypsum-limited brackish concentrate?
See the decisive testNovelty remains unresolved.

A specific difference to investigate.
When crystallization slows, the process liquid, the reused seeds or both may be responsible. Acting on the wrong cause can waste reagents, seed material and operating time.
Cross reference and process liquid with fresh and reused seeds. Use the response pattern and its uncertainty in a fixed action table, then measure whether that extra information improves the operating decision.
Separate the two influences.
| Assay liquid | Fresh/reference seeds | Reused process seeds |
|---|---|---|
| Matched reference liquid | Reference response | Seed-associated response |
| Process liquid | Liquid-associated response | Combined response |
The pattern is an operational diagnostic. It does not by itself prove a chemical mechanism. Seed growth, active surface area, aggregation and carryover must be distinguished from deactivation.
Start with what already exists.
Seeded precipitation, antiscalant removal, seed reuse and kinetic diagnosis are established. McCool’s dissertation already examines inhibitor carryover and seed behavior; later work also addresses seed management and crystallization monitoring.
The open contribution is the incremental value of this crossed assay in a practical action rule. Calling ordinary seeded precipitation a new process would overstate it.

Make the comparison decisive.
Match liquid chemistry, measure seed size and area, and check independent chemical evidence.
Choose the rule on development data, with a conventional fallback for uncertain answers.
Compare useful decisions at the same throughput and water-quality requirement.
The main comparison is against a calibrated kinetic and seed-management policy with the same feasible actions. Charge the proposed method for every assay, delay, handling step, seed change and reagent input.
The planning design contains 72 development assay vessels, 36 confirmation campaigns of three decision cycles, and 18 downstream RO compatibility runs. Repeated cycles and nested seed histories do not become independent feed replicates.
Know when to stop.
- The qualified responses cannot reliably distinguish states that need different actions.
- The extra measurements reproduce what the conventional policy already knows.
- Assay time, cost or uncertainty removes the practical benefit.
- Downstream compatibility or the agreed water and residual requirements fail.
The decision is based on total variable operating burden per qualifying treated-concentrate volume at fixed throughput. A favorable diagnostic plot alone is insufficient.
The next useful step.
Start with a named scientific lead, a suitable gypsum-limited brackish concentrate and a laboratory able to qualify the reference assays. Study A is the first host discussion because it matches the project’s initial concentrate-recovery application.
The existing preliminary study plan uses a 12-funded-month envelope. The host must reconcile any additional chemical measurements before confirmation.
